Is your product feed ready for Black Friday?

A weak product feed can quietly undermine your Black Friday campaigns. How to spot one in Google Ads and Meta Ads, and what you can still fix before launch.

If you run an online store and you’re getting ready for Black Friday, this one is for you. Whether you manage your own PPC campaigns or work with a specialist or an agency, this is where their weak spot may be.

We’re talking about the product feed: the file that can drag down your campaign results on exactly the most important sales days of the year.

How do you recognize a “weak” feed?

The product feed is the database Google Ads, Merchant Center, and Meta Ads read to show your products in ads. If it’s complete, accurate, and up to date, your ads show more often and bring in more revenue for every euro or dollar you spend. If it isn’t, you have a weak feed, and it can cost you money.

A weak feed:

  • has unoptimized or overly generic product titles (for example, “women’s red dress,” with no brand or other details);
  • is missing key attributes: GTIN, brand, color, size, gender, age group;
  • has prices that are wrong or different from the website (usually because the feed doesn’t sync with the site every day);
  • has a wrong product category. Google now assigns a category automatically, so it’s worth checking what it picked and adding your own product_type;
  • has no sale_price column, so the discount isn’t visible (price versus sale_price);
  • has no custom labels to split campaigns by (best sellers, Black Friday deals, high-margin products, and so on);
  • has low-quality images or images that break platform rules.

Two phone screens side by side: on the left, a Shopping ad with a short product title, marked with an X; on the right, the same product with a complete title, marked with a green check

An example from a Romanian store (the ad text is in Romanian): the short title on the left, “custom tote bag,” versus the full title on the right, “custom cotton tote bag with long handles.”

Why the product feed matters

Ad platforms rely more and more on AI and automated signals. How much data they get, and how good it is, changes results a lot. Algorithms only work well with accurate information.

A clean, optimized feed lets AI-driven campaigns learn faster what works for your store. It also tends to mean that:

  • your products show up in more relevant auctions;
  • the average cost per click usually drops for well-described products;
  • conversion rate and ROAS usually go up.

Signs your feed needs work

Here’s what to look for in Google Ads and Meta Ads.

Google Ads

The Merchant Center feed powers Performance Max, Shopping, and dynamic remarketing campaigns. If it has approval errors, missing information, or prices that don’t match the website, products get limited automatically or stop showing altogether.

You likely have a feed problem if:

  • the products with the most impressions have no conversions (this can point to price, image, or description issues);
  • Performance Max or Shopping campaigns cost a lot and bring few conversions;
  • many products show limited visibility or item issues in Merchant Center;
  • you have policy errors: watermarked images, prohibited titles, wrong prices, and so on.

Meta Ads

In Meta Ads, a well-set-up feed means more than active products in the catalog. The pixel (and the Conversions API) must send the right events (ViewContent, AddToCart, Purchase) with the same product IDs as the catalog. If the IDs don’t match, Meta can’t serve dynamic ads properly.

Also check in Commerce Manager that the feed has no rejected products and updates automatically.

One sign the feed isn’t connected properly: Advantage+ catalog ads start slowly, cost a lot, and deliver low ROAS for no clear reason.

What you can still do before Black Friday

It’s not too late to improve your feed if you start today.

If you’re reading this 7–10 days before your Black Friday campaign goes live, hold off on big structural changes to the feed.

During that window, don’t change product IDs, categories, or URLs, don’t make bulk price changes, and don’t delete products.

What you can safely do, even two or three days out: update stock and availability, fix prices (without changing IDs or URLs, because you’d lose the product’s history and break dynamic remarketing), and add the custom labels you need for your Black Friday campaigns. For the bigger picture, see our Black Friday guide.

Good data is for your customers too

On Black Friday, shoppers move fast. They land on a site, search, compare, save, and decide. If the product title is vague, the image is unclear, or the price and discount are missing, they move on to the next store.

Algorithms read your product feed first, but in the end it’s people who see it and buy. An hour spent now on titles, images, and prices can save you from a Black Friday where the budget burns for nothing.
