ChatGPT now has ads: how to turn users’ questions into orders
OpenAI has introduced paid advertising in ChatGPT. What conversational ads mean for your business, where they run as of October 2026, and how to get ready.
More and more searches now start in a chat: someone asks a question and wants an answer on the spot, not a list of links.
In January 2026, OpenAI announced that it was introducing paid advertising in ChatGPT. For advertisers, it’s a new channel: your brand can appear at the very moment someone is talking about a problem you solve.
What this means for your business
These aren’t classic banners. The ad appears below ChatGPT’s answer and is tied to the topic of the conversation. Why it’s worth watching:
- It shows up at the right moment. The person has just asked about something related to what you sell. If your offer appears then, you’re in front of a “warm” prospect.
- Targeting by intent. General interests matter less, and the need expressed in the conversation matters more. It’s closer to a Google search than to a Facebook feed.
- A large audience. OpenAI says ads help keep ChatGPT free, and the free version is the one most people use.
- The answer stays separate. Your ad doesn’t become the assistant’s recommendation: it’s clearly labeled as sponsored. It only gets attention if the offer genuinely fits the person’s question.
Safety and trust
To keep users’ trust, OpenAI has set a few rules: ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers, they’re clearly labeled, and they appear separately from the answer.
Conversations stay private: they aren’t shared with advertisers, who receive only aggregated performance data such as views and clicks, and OpenAI says it doesn’t sell user data. Ads aren’t shown to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18, and they don’t appear next to sensitive or regulated topics such as health or politics.
Where ChatGPT ads run as of October 2026
The rollout is gradual. At the announcement, ads were tested only in the US, with adult users on the Free plan and the Go subscription. Since then:
- In August 2026, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT ads to 31 European markets, naming Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Austria. Since August 31, self-serve Ads Manager is open in all 31.
- OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability list now covers 63 countries where the business that advertises and gets billed can be based, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and most EU countries.
- Ads are still shown only on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts don’t see them. In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, personalized ads are not available for now.
You choose the countries where your ads can run when you set up targeting, and some new self-serve accounts can initially advertise only in their home country. Our ChatGPT Ads page keeps these details up to date.
What you can do now
Pushy advertising has no place in a conversation. What will count is how useful your offer is for the person’s question: a clear offer and a page that answers exactly what they asked. In practice, the same things that make a Google Ads campaign work well today.
Whoever prepares their offers, product pages, and answers to customers’ frequent questions now starts a step ahead.
