The end of “Add to cart”: how Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol sells your products

With the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), shoppers can buy directly in AI Mode in Google Search or in the Gemini app, without going through your site’s cart. What’s confirmed, what it means for your store and how to prepare.

Picture your online store. Today, to buy from you, a customer goes through a patience test: they land on the site, dig through menus to find the product, add it to the cart, and type in their payment details by hand. Every extra click is a chance to change their mind or get distracted. The result: abandoned carts.

Google wants to shorten that path with the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). It’s an open-source standard, a “common language” that lets AI agents, merchants, and payment providers talk to each other. Google developed it with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart. More than 20 other companies, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and Adyen, have publicly backed it.

The first use case: for eligible products, a shopper can complete the purchase directly in AI Mode in Google Search or in the Gemini app, without visiting the site, and pay with Google Pay or PayPal. The merchant remains the seller of record, so the order, the delivery, and the customer relationship stay with you.

The diagram above, from Google’s developer blog (Under the Hood: Universal Commerce Protocol, January 11, 2026), shows where UCP sits: between the places people shop (AI Mode, Gemini, and others) and the merchant’s systems, with standard capabilities for product discovery, cart, identity, checkout, and orders. Google’s launch announcement: New tech and tools for retailers to succeed in an agentic shopping era.

Where UCP stands in October 2026

At launch in January 2026, checkout through UCP was available only to US merchants. Since then:

  • March 2026: Google added optional Cart, Catalog, and Identity Linking capabilities (several items from one store at once, real-time product data, loyalty benefits) and announced simpler UCP onboarding in Merchant Center. Commerce Inc, Salesforce, and Stripe said they would implement UCP on their platforms.
  • May 2026 (Google Marketing Live): Google introduced Universal Cart, a shared cart across retailers, and said many UCP features would roll out in the US first, then in Canada and Australia, with the UK later.
  • September 2026: in its holiday shopping update, Google said UCP already powers direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers, that the new capabilities are rolling out gradually in the US, and that Australia and Canada follow early next year. Merchants manage it through the UCP integration hub in Merchant Center.

So, outside the US, it’s still a question of when, not if. No date has been announced for the EU.

Goodbye to the classic path through the website

Until now, the path looked like this: the customer searches, sees an ad, visits your site, adds products to the cart, pays, and completes the order. The new path is shorter and starts from intent. The customer tells the assistant what they want, the AI shows products and prices, and the order happens in the same conversation, with a confirmation. Your site is still the storefront for people, but it also becomes a data source that AI agents read to close the sale.

Where will customers “meet” your products?

Until now, you had to bring customers to your site. With UCP, your products can also be bought where people are talking to an AI assistant:

  • In AI Mode in Google Search and in the Gemini app. These were the first surfaces announced. The customer types what they need, for example “I need a four-person tent that holds up in the rain and arrives by Friday,” gets options and can order on the spot.
  • Elsewhere, later. Google says the protocol is designed to work on other surfaces in the future and isn’t tied to a single provider. Voice assistants and messaging apps are obvious candidates, but none have been announced.

Make your store easy for AI to read

To benefit from UCP, the first step is product data that algorithms can digest. If you run on a platform that took part in the standard, such as Shopify, expect to get it through the platform; watch its announcements.

If your site is custom-built, the protocol specifications are public and your tech team handles the implementation. For Google’s version, you also need an active Merchant Center account and products eligible for checkout. In the meantime, tidy up your “digital shelves”: a complete product feed, precise descriptions, and prices and stock updated often.

What you can do now, even if UCP checkout isn’t available in your country yet:

  • Get your Merchant Center feed in shape. It’s the same data source that powers Google’s shopping campaigns today and will power AI-driven shopping too.
  • Watch the announcements. Google, your ecommerce platform, and your payment provider will say when and how UCP becomes available in your market.
  • Measure properly. When some orders happen without a site visit, you’ll need data from Merchant Center and from your store platform, not just Google Analytics, to know where sales come from.
