Personalized ads in PPC
Personalized ads rest on a simple idea: the right message, at the right time, for the right person. How to make them work under GDPR and Consent Mode v2.
Want personalized ads? So do we.
If you run an online business, this article explains what online advertising looks like today and how you can help the agency you work with. When you talk openly, you build better-targeted ads for your customers together.
And if you simply see ads like everyone else, you’ll get a clearer picture of what sits behind the sponsored posts in your feeds.
GDPR and Consent Mode v2 changed the rules
People expect relevant ads, matched to what they do and what they need. Personalization gets attention and usually lifts conversion rates. But data protection rules and the blocking of third-party cookies (Safari and Firefox block them by default; Chrome still allows them) push advertisers to find new ways to keep pay-per-click campaigns efficient.
Have you recently seen an ad that seemed made just for you, as if the internet had sent you a personal note?
If so, you saw a personalized ad.
PPC personalization starts from a simple principle: the right message, at the right time, for the right audience.
AI and personalized ads
The ad platforms’ AI-driven algorithms use a range of signals to adapt the copy, and sometimes the images, to a person’s intent and interests. Automated bidding already relies on this. In real time, and within the permissions given through the cookie banner, the algorithms read the signals about a person, pick the combination of headlines and images that fits, and decide how much to bid for that impression.
Things have moved fast over the last couple of years. On one side, AI tools have improved a lot. On the other, privacy and data protection rules have tightened.
Before those rules, the algorithms saw much more of how people behaved online.
Today, some of your visitors decline cookies, and through Consent Mode v2 the platforms receive only what each person has allowed. The AI, for all its power, is working with a map on which some points are missing. To reach its destination, it connects the points that remain and models the signals where the map is blank.
AI tools have also become everyday tools for digital marketers. To get good answers, though, you need to know what to ask and how to guide them. As an example, we asked ChatGPT to outline the essentials of PPC personalization. Below is that outline, checked and corrected by our team.
Personalized PPC ads in brief
What is PPC personalization?
Personalization in pay-per-click advertising means adapting ads based on concrete data about people, such as:
- browsing and purchase history (where they have given consent);
- location;
- on-site behavior (from your own first-party data);
- the device they use;
- stated preferences (in forms, past interactions, and so on).
For example, if someone recently looked at an aromatherapy diffuser but didn’t buy it, you can show them an ad with a special discount or with the product’s main benefits.
What you gain from personalized ads
- More conversions. Personalized ads usually convert better because they answer the person’s need more precisely. A supplements store, for example, can show past buyers a bundle of complementary products.
- Lower cost per click. Google and other platforms reward relevant ads, which can bring the cost per click down. Dynamic keyword insertion, for instance, shows headlines that match the search, which raises the ad’s relevance and, through Quality Score, can lower what you pay per click.
- Privacy compliance. A well-built strategy based on first-party data helps you stay within GDPR and Consent Mode v2.
Tools for personalizing PPC campaigns
- Google Ads enhanced conversions: sends hashed contact details of people who bought or submitted a form, for more accurate measurement while respecting privacy.
- Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) with the Conversions API: helps optimize campaigns with first-party data sent directly from your website or server.
What we think
PPC results depend more and more on personalization, done within GDPR. This is where first-party data, such as your existing customer list, becomes essential. It shows who actually buys from you and gives the algorithms a good starting point.
We follow the changes in the ad platforms closely and adapt our strategies to them.
